Programmes and rules for your sector

Where to find money and help in 8 sectors, and the rules that most often catch founders out.

AI and machine learning

Compute is the biggest early cost for most AI startups, so start with the credit programmes. Then plan for data and AI rules early, especially if you sell into Europe.

Watch for: EU AI Act duties if you sell in Europe, data protection laws (GDPR, India DPDP Act, US state laws), and the licence terms of any model or dataset you build on. EU AI Act overview →

Fintech

Most fintech products need a licence or a regulated partner before launch. Regulatory sandboxes let you test with real customers under supervision.

Watch for: Payment, lending and e-money licences, KYC and anti-money-laundering checks, and data security standards such as PCI DSS.

Health, medtech and biotech

Long timelines and strict rules, but also some of the largest non-dilutive grants available to startups.

Watch for: HIPAA in the US, the EU Medical Device Regulation (CE marking), CDSCO approval in India, and clinical evidence requirements.

Climate and cleantech

Climate startups can combine grants, programme support and patient capital from climate-focused funds.

Watch for: Environmental and carbon claims must be backed by evidence. Regulators in the EU, UK and US are cracking down on greenwashing.

E-commerce and D2C brands

Margins depend on marketing costs, returns and logistics, so get your pricing and tax set-up right early.

Watch for: Sales tax, VAT or GST on cross-border orders, consumer protection and returns rules, and product labelling. Pricing strategies guide →

SaaS and software

Plenty of free and discounted software is available to startups. Enterprise buyers will ask about security early.

Watch for: Data protection laws (GDPR and others), and security reviews such as SOC 2 or ISO 27001 for larger customers. Lean Canvas guide →

Hardware and manufacturing

Hardware needs more capital before revenue: prototypes, tooling, certification and stock.

  • HAX hardware-focused accelerator and investor
  • SBIR/STTR US R&D grants that fund many hardware startups
  • Innovate UK UK grants for R&D and prototypes

Watch for: Product safety certification (CE in Europe, FCC in the US, BIS in India), minimum order quantities and import duties. Supply chain drivers guide →

Food, agritech and consumer goods

Food businesses must register with the food regulator before they sell, and labelling rules differ by country.

Watch for: Food safety registration, ingredient and allergen labelling, shelf-life testing and import rules. Market segmentation guide →
